Roger Blackmon, age 83, of Baird, and formerly of Coleman and Del Rio, died Saturday, March 20, 2021 at his residence with his daughters by his side.

The family will host a visitation from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 26, 2021 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 W. Pecan Street, in Coleman.  A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2021 at the First Baptist Church, 200 East College Avenue, in Coleman. Rev. Ferris Akins will officiate with Rev. Marty Akins assisting. Interment will follow in the Old Runnels Cemetery in Runnels County.  Services are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman. 

He was born Roger Glenn Blackmon on November 1, 1937 in Ballinger to Lawrence Blackmon and Luella “Dimp” Dickinson Blackmon.  Roger grew up in Ballinger and graduated from Ballinger High School.  He then attended Texas Tech University where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in animal science.  Roger then went on to obtain his masters degree from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado.  He married Karen Sue James on August 12, 1960 in Lubbock.  Roger taught school in Norton and then became a County Extension Agent serving in Eastland, Dickens, Spur, Coleman, Del Rio, and then retired to Baird.  Roger had a zest for life and a passion for Quarter Horses.  He loved talking and educating people about horses and could tell some colorful stories about them.  Roger also loved all genres of music, watching old western movies, and reading about history.  He never met a stranger and would converse with anyone.  Roger was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the First Baptist Church in Coleman.  His kind spirit and personality will be missed by all who knew him.

Roger is joined in heaven by his parents, Lawrence and Dimp Blackmon, and his wife, Karen Sue Blackmon.

He is survived by his daughters, Cara Blackmon-Harting of Frisco, and Janis Laws and husband Phillip of San Antonio; and his grandchildren, Chandler Harting, Nick Uretsky, Cole Harting, Jett Laws, and Olivia Laws.

Memorials are suggested in memory of Roger to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at or to the Alzheimer’s Association at
