Mertie Melrose Brown, 101, of Bangs, died Friday, January 22, 2010 in Coleman County Medical Center. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Burkett Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Mertie Melrose Brown was born August 19, 1908 on the Cordon Ranch in Callahan County, the daughter of James Clinton McGee and Minnie Cavanaugh McGee. She grew up in Callahan and Coleman Counties and attended school at Caddo Peak, Dressey and Gouldbusk. She met John Franklin Brown, while standing in line at a carnival in Burkett. They married in 1929 in Burkett and later they moved to Bangs in 1965. After the death of Mr. Brown on August 27, 1967, she went to work in restaurants. She later worked as a Nurse's Aide at Twilight Nursing Home in Bangs. She retired in 1988, at the age of 80, and received a 20 year plaque from the nursing home. She made many quilts for her family and was a member of the Church of Christ in Bangs.
Survivors include four sons, Earl Howard Brown of Hobbs, New Mexico, Foy E. Brown of Tucson, Arizona, Harold Kenneth Brown of Bangs, Clois Ray Brown of Andrews; 17 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Hillary Everett Brown in 1979, one daughter, Ernestine Brown Brinkley in 2009, two brothers and two sisters.
Family visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, January 25, 2009 at Stevens Funeral Home.
